Best Self-Help Books of 2012 – Be Your Own Counsellor & Coach

As we are coming to the close of 2012, I’d like to thank everyone I’ve met and all the great new friends I’ve made in my first year of blogging (well few months really!) It’s been great to join this new community. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your comments on my blog during these last months. Thank you all so much for your encouragement and support.

I thought I’d close 2012 with a few of my favourite self-help books from this year. A very Happy New Year to you all and I look forward to following your posts and blogs throughout 2013.

Here Are My Best Self-Help Books Of 2012

Daring Greatly – Brene Brown: Amazon.com & Amazon.co.uk.
Full of insight and wisdom, this book discusses how to ‘dare greatly,’ how to get over the feeling that we are not good enough and how to embrace vulnerability and courage and ‘put ourselves in the arena.’ The ‘arena’ can be anything: pursuing a new relationship, daring to try for a new career or opening our heart to others. It’s a compelling and inspiring read which offers great warmth and advice. If you haven’t read anything by researcher and writer Brene Brown then this book is a good start. Also check out her first TED Talk – The Power of Vulnerability – I think you will be captivated.

The Power of Habit – Charles Duhigg: Amazon.com & Amazon.co.uk
Understanding how and why we create habits is the key to changing them. Using the latest neuroscience Duhigg, an investigative reporter for the New York Times, explains the three-part structure of habits. Full of stories and interesting anecdotes this is an engaging read.

Happier At Home – Gretchen Rubin: Amazon.com & Amazon.co.uk
Following on from her huge success with The Happiness Project, Rubin offers more thought-provoking ideas and comments on what happiness means and how to find it.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can’t Stop Talking – Susan Cain: Amazon.com & Amazon.co.uk
A fascinating look at the difference between the contemplative person – the introvert, and the action oriented personality – the extrovert. She explores the fact that society constantly diminishes the introvert in favour of the extrovert, to its cost. If you can’t read the entire book then check out her brilliant TED talk – The Power Of Introverts – which summarises her ideas perfectly.

Rip It Up: A radically New Approach To Change – Richard Wiseman: Amazon.com & Amazon.co.uk.
Using behavioural theory to improve your life – my full review is here.

Selfhood – Terry Lynch: Amazon.com & Amazon.co.uk.
An excellent self-help workbook for those experiencing mental health issues of all severities. Written by a medical doctor and psychotherapist – my full review is here.

  2. Ruth, your generous comment on LfD once again brought me across to your place. Just love this selection of books. You look after yourself this coming year. Paul

      1. Well in a very real sense, of course. But what’s been fascinating is realising that the change from AZ to OR, or rather Rural OR, has been, and still is, full of complex feelings. We are still letting those feelings wander around us so it’s too soon to offer an analysis.

Maybe at some point in the next few weeks I will feel sufficiently confident to open up to the experience on Learning from Dogs.

The dogs, however, have taken the move in their stride and utterly love the freedom they enjoy from the 10 acres that is readily available to them. Yet another lesson from them!

        Best wishes, Paul

        1. Hi Paul, yes, moves are always complex things – endings and beginnings – cause our brains to spin a bit even if they are things we want to do. Very best with it all, I will look forward to reading about your experiences if/when you can share them – I know others will be interested too. Take good care, Ruth 🙂
