Intuition, also described as ‘gut instinct,’ is known to most of us. Sometimes we just ‘feel’ that something isn’t right. We have a suspicion that a person isn’t quite what they seem. Do we listen to these insights? Or do we dismiss them, tell ourselves not to be silly? Maybe we do this at our peril. Reading Gavin de Becker’s best-selling book The Gift of Fear encourages us to look closely at the gift of intuition which we have – particularly when we could be in danger. While it’s not an uplifting thought to have, considering we could be at harm, surely it’s better to be forewarned and forearmed. Gavin de Becker is well-known in the US as a protector of people at risk: such as senators, celebrities and Justices of the Supreme Court. This book, which was a best-seller in the late 1990s, demonstrates his vast knowledge in the area of risk and threat assessment. Its digital release in 2010 contained a foreword by de Becker in which he explained that all of his insights still stand, perhaps now more than ever in this overtly technological age where we often have the illusion of anonymity and safety.

You don’t have to be facing a gun culture, though, to get something from this book. Maybe you’re trying to find a partner who will be good for you and your children; or you’re troubled by an existing relationship or the behaviour of an ex-partner; perhaps you’re in business and searching for an effective employee; or maybe you’re trying to stay safe as you go about your daily life. Whatever the circumstance, this is an invaluable book which could help to keep you safe by listening to your greatest ally: your intuition. It is written in a clear and winning style that pulls no punches and you’ll have your heart in your mouth at one of his early stories – you’ll know which one I mean if you read the book. Gavin de Becker is a man with a mission, he wants to help others by sharing all that he has learned, and he has learned a lot. He is a man well worth listening to.

Let me know what you think to The Gift of Fear. Has it helped you? Has listening to your intuition worked for you? Have you ignored your intuition and suffered because of it? Or maybe you think The Gift of Fear is unhelpful? Whatever your thoughts, I’d like to hear them. You can return to this page at any time – I really look forward to your comments.

  1. O, I don’t like the use of the word fear in this book. I don’t think intuition = fear at all. What are your thoughts on this after reading the book?

    1. Hi Koni, it really is a great book and well worth reading. You are right, it is not that intuition = fear but that the book is asking people to trust their inner instincts, those moments when we might feel something is wrong etc., and asking us to listen to ourselves. Our body tells us things and in this particular instance, when we are talking about being under physical threat and we feel fear, it can tell us that something is wrong and we should listen to this gut instinct/our intuition. So many people in the book had found themselves in dangerous situations and had felt that something was wrong but told themselves not to be silly, or dismissed their own instinct, to their cost. 1. Thank you so much for your thoughtful response. I’m gonna get this book. My therapist and I have been spending a lot of time focusing on me being aware of my body and feelings and what they are telling me. This book would be great for me.
